University plays a central role in building knowledge for the economy through education, scientific research, and community service. It prepares qualified professionals, produces a knowledge-based economy that contributes to solving development challenges, and opens up avenues for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Globally, particularly in successful economies, universities have consistently been active economic partners through strategic partnerships with technological and industrial institutions. This cooperation between the university and the industrial sector has enabled the funding of research projects, resulting in the development of material products and services available in the marketplace. In Algeria, universities have begun to adopt this approach through initiatives such as the “Fourth Generation University” project and support for startups and small businesses.
However, this Algerian approach raises many questions about the nature of the relationship between the university and the economy as an effective and productive partnership, such as:
• Should knowledge always serve the market? Or does the university have other roles that are not measured by financial return?
• What can we learn from successful international experiences in this context?
• What are the pros and cons of the partnership between scientific research and economic institutions?
• What are the reasons behind the gap between research outputs and the needs of the labor market?
• How can research results be practically utilized and turned into marketable products?
• And what role can the Algerian university play in creating an environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship?
In this context, the 2025 summer forum of the INAS Network (International Network of Algerian Scientists) aims to open a broad scientific discussion on the relationship between the university and the labor market. The participating Algerian researchers from inside and outside the country will exchange experiences, refine visions, and explore the future of the Algerian university in light of global transformations.
