Supporting Academic Writing in Algeria:
Introducing the Algerian Online Writing Lab (AOWL)

The Algerian Online Writing Lab (AOWL) is transforming academic writing and publishing capabilities for Algerian students and researchers. Under the leadership of Dr. Kamal Belmihoub from Baruch College – City University of New York, the lab connects Algerian researchers with a global network of writing experts to support manuscript refinement and submission.
During a presentation by AOWL’s consultant team on May 31st, 2025, key stakeholders discussed the persistent challenges of language proficiency and publication barriers in Algeria. The initiative offers comprehensive support through both synchronous online consultations and asynchronous written feedback sessions.
The webinar addresses three critical challenges facing Algerian academia:limited English proficiency, insufficient global collaboration opportunities, and constraints within local publishing systems. The lab’s mission directly supports the goal of increasing Algerian academic visibility and facilitating publication in high-impact international journals.
Since its establishment in 2021, AOWL has successfully conducted 37 consultations across diverse academic disciplines, supporting PhD candidates, recent graduates, and established professionals.
The program’s diverse team of consultants and support staff provides constructive feedback designed to enhance both research methodology and writing skills, ensuring that Algerian scholars’ work meets the standards of reputable international journals.

- What role can partnerships between Algeria-based and diaspora scholars play in enhancing writing instruction?
- The importance of writing education as a tool for fostering critical thinking, research, and communication in English
